In March 2024 the British Council offices will be running a photo competition for Alumni UK. We will encourage all UK alumni to share photos under various competition categories, with the aims of:

  • expanding the existing network of Alumni UK;
  • showcasing of the talent and creativity of international UK alumni and stimulate visual storytelling;
  • advocating for efforts towards international collaboration and raising awareness of global challenges;
  • encouraging networking and engagement between UK alumni around the world.

Award categories

The photos could include documentary/photojournalism, sport, wildlife, fine arts, portraits, street photography, or environmental conservation or diversity under the following categories:

  • Cultural diversity
  • Environment and landscape
  • Culture, creativity and innovation
  • Community and social action

Alumni can submit up to one photograph per category.

Entry process

To submit a photo competition entry, alumni must upload their photo to the photo competition page on the Alumni UK platform – Photo Competition 2024

Only registered alumni will be able to upload photos (although the photo competition page will be open for anyone to view). All entered photos will be displayed on the photo competition page, and Alumni will be able to “like” each other’s entries.

If the alum is not an existing member of the Alumni UK platform, they will need to register on the platform to upload their photo (or “like” other photos). We will have a bespoke registration form to easily facilitate sign up.

Finally, alumni will be encouraged to share their photo on social media (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter) using the competition hashtag. Please note that although all alumni will be encouraged to share their photos on social media, we will not in actuality check or police this as part of the application process. Photos uploaded to the photo competition page will be the photos that are officially entered to the competition.

Rewards and incentive

The winning entry in each of the four categories will receive a trip to the UK. There will also be a fifth award to the most popular entry based on number of likes received on the Alumni UK platform.

Winning photos will also be published and showcased worldwide via the Alumni UK British Council brand.

In addition to the main prize, there will also be a lucky draw from all verified international UK alumni to win a 12-month subscription to British Council digital library. Fifty of these subscriptions are available to photo competition entrants.
