BCC: Mixed Picture for UK Exporters On US Tariffs

Jul 31 2026

The US has introduced new tariffs to replace its current levies on UK imports which have expired today. For most UK companies there is no effective change, but there is welcome confirmation that the removal of US tariffs on whisky has taken effect

Duties that must be paid on most imports of UK goods to the US will remain at 10 per cent, plus previously existing Most-Favoured Nation duty rates.

For steel and aluminium goods, the UK keeps its comparative advantage with the US, as it faces duties of 25%, compared with 50% for many other countries. On pharmaceuticals and automotives, the UK also has a strong position – none of those tariff arrangements have changed.

However, in other sectors, businesses will be concerned about their competitiveness – as imports of goods from other countries have been treated differently.

Responding to the changes, William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“For most firms exporting goods to the US it will remain business as usual today, they will see no change in the costs they are facing. There is also some good news with the removal of tariffs on whisky, one of the UK’s global export success stories.

“The Economic Prosperity Deal with the US also means that automotives, pharmaceuticals, steel and aluminium are insulated from these changes and should not face further investigation.

“However, there will be concerns about the loss of the UK’s competitive advantage over the EU and other countries which have secured a more favourable deal in other goods sectors.

“The US is also carrying our further investigations over digital service taxes which could lead to further uncertainty for firms.

“It is crucial that the UK continues negotiations to ensure our companies have the best possible long-term trading terms with the US. Expanding our goods and services exports is vital to the UK’s economic growth and the US is our largest single country trading partner.

“But this is unlikely to be the end of the story on US tariffs for either the UK or the rest of the world. The government will need to keep a close eye on developments to keep the UK at the front of the pack.”

“Are You Going to Tell Me What To Do?”: Small Actions That Help Reduce the Risk of Fires

Jul 22 2026

With the start of the summer season, the “Are You Going to Tell Me What To Do?” campaign is once again drawing attention to the importance of responsible behaviour in reducing the risk of fires and the proper disposal of cigarette butts—especially during the dry and hot months when the danger of fires is higher.

The topic is particularly relevant in light of the official data on fires in Bulgaria. According to the Executive Forest Agency, only around 5% of fires are caused by natural factors, while in most cases the cause is linked to human negligence, actions, or failure to act. National Statistical Institute data for 2024 also show that fires resulting in material damage, fatalities, or injuries accounted for the highest share of crisis events recorded in the country—50.2%. These figures highlight the importance of careful and responsible behaviour in reducing the risk of fires.

This is precisely why the campaign uses a direct and slightly provocative tone to remind people that sometimes the simplest messages are the most important ones. When the risk of fires is elevated, even a seemingly minor act of carelessness can have serious consequences—for example, a cigarette butt that has not been fully extinguished or has been discarded in an inappropriate place.

With messages such as Just saying, one unextinguished cigarette can set an entire forest on fire,” the initiative aims to capture attention, spark conversation, and most importantly encourage adult consumers to properly extinguish and dispose of their cigarette butts in designated receptacles.

“When we talk about fire prevention, we often think of large-scale measures and complex solutions. The truth, however, is that many risky situations begin with something very small and part of everyday life—careless behaviour outdoors or a cigarette butt that has not been fully extinguished or properly disposed of. Through the ‘Are You Going to Tell Me What To Do?’ campaign, we want to remind people of this in a way they will hear, remember, and relate to their daily lives, while encouraging more responsible behaviour,” commented Dimitar Naydenov, Corporate Affairs & Communications Manager at JTI.

The campaign will run throughout the month of July and will highlight the risks that carelessly discarded cigarette butts can pose to nature.

“Are You Going to Tell Me What To Do?” is an awareness campaign that promotes responsible behaviour and the proper disposal of cigarette butts. In the event of a fire in forest or agricultural areas, citizens are urged to immediately call 112 to ensure a rapid response and help limit potential damage.

JTI, part of the JT Group, is a modern and dynamic international company focused on quality and innovation. BCC: New PM Must Give Business ‘Breathing Space’

Jul 21 2026

Responding to Andy Burnham’s first speech as Prime Minister in Downing Street, Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“The British Chambers of Commerce would like to congratulate Andy Burnham on being appointed Prime Minister.

“The Chamber Network is ready to work in partnership with his new government from today to make the changes needed to deliver the economic growth we all need.

“Businesses thrive on long-term certainty and the Prime Minister’s pledge for stability and a 10-year plan are welcome. The challenge ahead is delivering on those pledges – and delivering growth.

“The cost of living and the cost of doing business are two sides of the same coin, so it’s vital that Prime Minister also gives firms ‘breathing space’ from cost pressures.

“Our surveys show energy and taxation are squeezing businesses, hitting confidence and investment. Easing the cost of doing business will deliver the growth we all want to see.

“In his speech today he spoke about boosting British industry through public procurement, something which we have long called for. We widely welcome his pledge to support young people and skills.

“Getting growth in ‘every postcode’ of the UK is only possible if business is placed at the heart of the economic strategy. Any structural changes to the economy must deliver growth – and that happens when firms invest and expand.”

BCC: Business Backs Focus On Trade and Devolution

Jul 17 2026

Responding to the Chancellor’s Mansion House speech, Kate Shoesmith, Policy Director at the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

“There were clear themes in tonight’s speech by the Chancellor that businesses will hope are carried on by Andy Burnham’s new administration.

“Over the last two years, the Chancellor has supported important steps in the right direction. Her ambition to build a closer trading relationship with the EU is something that will resonate with many firms. Reducing barriers with our largest trading partner can lower costs, boost export opportunities and support growth for firms of all sizes.

“The commitment to further devolution is also encouraging. Business leaders on the ground understand the strengths and challenges of their local economies, so any transfer of powers must be accompanied by meaningful engagement with the Chamber Network. It remains rooted in communities and connected to firms in every region and nation.

“A focus on strategic procurement is another important step. Our recent Great British Supply Chain report highlighted the opportunities to use public procurement more effectively. Revamping the system could strengthen domestic supply chains, support SMEs and create growth across the whole country.

“Businesses will be keen to see these ambitions carried forward and translated into practical action that delivers investment, growth and prosperity in every part of the UK.”
